Buttermilk Brownies

Buttermilk Brownies

2 c. all-purpose flour
2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 t. salt
1 c. unsalted butter
1 c. water
1/2 c. cocoa powder
1/2 c. buttermilk
2 large eggs
1 t. baking soda
1 t. vanilla extract

Buttermilk Frosting:
1/2 c. unsalted butter
1/2 c. cocoa powder
1/3 c. buttermilk
1 (1 pound) box powdered sugar
1 c. chopped pecans or walnuts
1/2 t. vanilla extract
dash of salt

1- Preheat Oven to 400 degrees.
2- In a large mixing bowl combine flour, sugar and salt; set aside.
3- In a saucepan combine butter, water and cocoa; bring to a boil, then pour over the dry ingredients.
4- Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla to mixture; blend well.
5- Pour batter into a well-greased and floured 11×16-inch jelly roll pan.  Bake for 20 minutes, then remove from oven and frost immediately with Buttermilk Frosting.

Buttermilk Frosting
1- In a saucepan, combine butter, cocoa and buttermilk; bring mixture to a boil. Remove from heat and then stir in powdered sugar, nuts, vanilla and salt.
2- Spread frosting over warm brownies.  Cool in pan on a wire rack, then cut into bars.
